I BOUGHT A '76 NEW AND IT ALWAYS HAD A VIBRATION AT IDLE (500 TO 700 RPM'S). I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER AND MANY OTHER MECHANICS THAT THIS IS CAUSED BY THE A/C COMPRESSOR. I NEVER DID MUCH IN TRYING TO FIX IT OTHER THEN REPLACING THE COMPRESSOR WHICH DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE OTHER DAY I HAPPENED TO HAVE ALL THE BELTS OFF AND OUT OF CURIOSITY STARTED THE CAR. SURE ENOUGH THE VIBRATION WAS COMPLETELY GONE. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A FIX FOR THIS.
Haha same here, but I kinda like the shaking of the car as long as it doesn't cause anything to go...say....BAD! My Vette has a definite shake to it at idle, nothing that I don't think should cause alarm. I took my A/C belt off a long time ago and it never changed the vibration of the Vette. I can't think how the belts being gone would cause your vibration. But I'm new to the Vette world so who knows!
Is your car a stick or auto? I have a 4spd. and the idle is supposed to be set at 900-1100. Lower and it will hardly run with the air cond. on. (Maybe this is what the mechanic meant?) I think other years had solenoids that kicked up the idle when the air cond. is engaged.
Truthfully, I think you are lookin for a problem when you dont really have one.....You say you bought it new, so you've had the car for 26 yrs now. Has the motor ever let you down? How many miles are on it now? One favorite motto (to some here anyway :jester ) is: If it aint broke, dont fix it.
tnt76vette-thanks for your reply. The car has 85,000 miles on it and is in excellent original shape, including paint. Regarding the vibration, it is nasty at times (and embarassing to a degree) and I'm just trying to find a fix for it. I guess I never really believed the mechanics who said '76's have it until I recently ran the engine with all belts removed (new water pump) and there was no vibration whatsoever. I've owned a '75 and an '80 and neither had the vibration. Anyway, if anyone can help, I'd certainly appreciate it.
I hope I didnt come across as uncaring Jud, I guess I didnt realize that it embarrassed you at times as you said. Hopefully someone here will provide you with a cure........
