Default 72 starter and tooth count

my starter gave up the ghost this arvo just before i was about to go on a local cruise, had to be tilt tray'd home. embarrassing
removed starter when home, applied power, extends out ok, but doesn't spin.
it's the original '72 made unit, it was rebuilt earlier this year.
so instead of mucking around with it again, i'll just get a new unit.
i want to keep the original look, so no mini starters etc., so whats a good starter to replace it with? brand?
also, 1972 - 350 auto, what tooth count ring gear do i have?

prefer shopping with Summit, better shipping prices downunder...

Did you rebuild it or send it out?
"Usually" it's just the brushes that are worn out - they wouldn't fail so soon - takes years.
For less than $20 US you can get the brushes, bushings, snap rings, and a new bendix.

are the starter bolts staggered or inline? you sure you are not better off taking it back to the rebuilder considering your location?

bolts are staggered on the starter i took off

all 3 holes are threadded

i will take it back to the shop that rebuilt it, but i will replace anyway for piece of mind.
unfortunately spares are not just on the shelf at a local parts store here, that's why i took it to a auto electrician to do.

so what tooth count is used then, 153 or 168?

Mike's answer is correct. Here's something for the OP's knowledge base: For SBCs there are 153 and 168-toothed flywheels. If your engine/flywheel uses a starter with the staggered bolts, you have the 168-tooth wheel. Starters for 153-tooth wheels have the bolts in line.

Here is a thought. Not rebuilt; components are 100% new. Part number is difficult to see but it is 96122 (for automatic transmission). Produced by Remy International (half of Delco-Remy?).

Starting in 1970 both the BB and SB starters are interchangeable as far as bolting to the engine, EXCEPT the correct BB starter is a heavy duty unit......get the 454 starter, more power and I think what you purchased is for a SB....your picture is not identifiable either way......you may be able to return it and exchange it

thanks all for the answers, got it sorted fri arvo last week.
took the original back to the auto electrician, windings on case shorted out..
and he was supposed to check it all out earlier this year when i had my engine out...

hunted on line and found a place down here that had 'Delco' starters.
210$ shipped half way across the country from me.

everybody wants to sell you a mini starter, but i wanted the original look still.

it was a starter for a small block.

spares, that's another story....
you guys are lucky with all your speed shops on every other corner, napa etc over there,
most places here dont keep stock, 2-3 days to get things local.
if it's not for a local made car, forget trying to find parts on a saturday arvo.

summit etc, takes around a week for parts to arrive for over there.
but shipping on buly heavy stuff is $$$.

The only 153 tooth flywheel on a 72 Vette is on a ZR-1 HD road race option Vette.....virtual " unicorn " with production of 20 units and the poster said its a base motor Vette with auto trans.....168 tooth count
