Default Did Chevy use leftovers?

I just noticed that the horn button has a '81 logo. if Chevy used leftovers, that would be anothr sign of a very early '82. if not, Bubba has had his way with the care much more than I care to think about (and fear)

Oh I think they did use some leftovers. They also had numerous mid year design changes.

Does the black book have start/stop Vins for each model year?

Mine only has the VIN breakdown by month through 1977, from then on it is missing from the Black Book.

Yes. When I tracked down all the previous owners I found a lot of good information including the original bill of sale, also figured out mine was one of the last 500 or so to come out of St. Louis. I also found when changing my U-joints I have a 4-speed drive shaft in an auto car. The only major maintenance done before I owned it was some engine stuff, the driveshaft was original. I'll look at the VIN's when I get home from work for you.

With the 4,869th built I would think you are a bit late to have any leftover parts. I would figure that the left overs would be gone within the first couple of hundred cars.

perhaps the chevy warehouse was out of that part that day, and a substitution was made. I ran into a similar problem redoing the front bearings on a 1/2 ton chevy truck. I cussed and fumed for an entire afternoon wondering why the bearings didnt seat like they should, until with a little research at the parts house discovered the factory had in fact installed 3/4 ton hardware up front. Not that i am complaining about the beefier setup, but no disclosure was ever made to me by chevy. This might be a general practice on their behalf when the normal parts arent available that day? Just my $0.02.

My 82 serial number is about 1100 lower than yours, it has the 82 horn emblem.
If you think it's original, maybe it was possible they were out of the 82 emblems that day? I have looked about everywhere for this part, haven't seen one yet.

1G1AY8786C5100001 thru 1G1AY8786C5125408 That's what the black book shows for 1982 models. Sixth digit is a 0(zero) for CE model. Ninth digit is a check code and varies. VIN tag ending 00017 was lost and not built.

Last night I thought you had an 81 for some reason, my mistake. D'oh!

Depending on the driver, horn buttons can be subject to a lot of abuse. It sounds like to me that it has been replaced with one from a bone yard.

My late '69 (23 October 1969) has some 68' parts on it. Even with 33,341 cars built before it, they still had leftover parts to put on my car...

I replaced the original clutch a few thousand miles ago...and I didn't even have the right flywheel/clutch setup! The flywheel was from the C2 series! It is the 14" but drilled for a 10.4" clutch (instead of 11"). Apparently, they just ran out of 11" clutches that day and installed the larger flywheel that mated to the smaller clutch. Who knows...remember the guys at the factory weren't worried about a "factory correct" car... :smash:

There are some errors in the Richard Prince book. I do not know of that chart as being one, however.

Chevy is in the business to sell cars and make money. Left over parts cost money. The ideal would be to run out of parts with the last car. They try to time the inventory for that. But sometimes there will be a few parts left over. So why not use them on the next model if they will fit and work as designed. On the other side of the coin, they some times would run out of a part too soon. The had the next years parts which they had setting there waiting for model change over so they would just use that rather then ordering a batch of the old parts and face the posibility of having too many old parts left over.

My guess would be that there are more cars out there with next year parts in them then there are cars with leftover parts.
