I actually let somebody back my car onto a dyno today! I was very surprised with the results. I expected about 250 hp at the rear wheels. Instead, I got 300! Torque with the bigblock was 375.
HP actually seems too high to me. Engine was rated at 390 hp gross in 68, at 5400 rpm. My hp peak, and engine pretty much topped out at 5000 rpm. I asked Dave not to take it above 5200 anyway. But 390 gross should be just over 300 net which would be ..... what... 270 rwhp? I dont get it... maybe I have a cam? My only mods are Qjet replacement carb, which does NOT add hp over stock, K&N air filter, which is worth somewhere between .5 and zero hp, and flowmaster mufflers. I am running points.
Of course this raises the expectations at the track. I should be doing a lot better than 14.3 @ 100 mph. Got to get that clutch fixed! :) MJ
Mark if those #'s are Correct you should be blowing my doors off! I dynoed at 275 hp and 320 tq a few weeks back, and as you know, I've gone 13.3 @ 104.
You should be looking at 12's if that #'s right!!!!
good numbers, remember et is directly related to treaction and getting off the line, speed is an indicator of horsepower, I would say you are doing good, get traction and you will drop your et. 10-20 percent loss from gross to net, kn says 5-15 horsepower add I think.
Mark, although the rating is gross you have to take into account what options your car has ie. AC PS PB etc. The fewer options you have the closer the gross rating will be to actual net power. Also the replacement carb if it is a Holley will aid your #s.
The Qjet replacement is a Qjet! :) Edelbrock #1901. I have changed the secondary rods but have not changed the primary jets or rods. The new carb improved driveability (easy starts, choke works, smoother idle, etc) but did not give extra oomph. I think a properly tuned and jetted Qjet will give me more power.
I will ask Ron D if he remembers doing any engine work on the car. I have a light set of springs on the distributor and set timing per lars' instructions to 36 degs total.
My next mod should be to replace the clutch fork pivot ball. I have the well documented problem shared by many others who have a centerforce clutch. I need to press the clutch pedal all the way to engage the clutch and shift gears. Really slows down the shifting - could be adding .5 sec to my 1/4 mile times.
Mike, the obvious scientific test is for us to swap cars and see if you can run 12.9 in mine and if I run 14.8 in yours!! NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!
   MJ
