this is some kind of washer/spacer (?) it appears to be made of rubber...
it goes on the spindle behind the rotor...where i am holding it...
one side was fine and one side was kinda broken up...
if i DO need it...what is it called and can i get it at a local parts place?
It's a seal that helps to keep liquified wheel bearing grease from getting on the rotors, and, it keeps moisture etc (entering between the steel shield & spindle) from getting at the inner bearing grease seal and machined spindle surface. To replace it, you unbolt the shield. They are available. Yes.... it is needed, unless Bubba provides a follow-up post and says you don't need it.
It's the grease seal. I've seen them in both cork and "rubber/fiber-like" material. Keeps the wheel bearing grease from slinging out. All the catalogs have them. Chuck
That is the "dust"seal. It keeps all of the debris and dirt and water from getting into the inner bearing and the grease from getting out. Most bearings are sealed also but that is just a little extra protection.
