I'm having a tough time with this one. Seems the only distributor caps the local auto parts has will not allow the lead wires from the control module to reach the plug on the cap. Also the cap interferes with the chrome ignition shield. Looks like the cap I need has the control wire plug rotated 90 degrees clockwise from the normal Delco cap. The cap I bought is a Delco #D336, or GM#1974408. The car is a 75 L-48 (350). Can anyone be of assistance on this before I loose my marbles? :cry
HOld the cap with terminals up, and 'nose' connector bulge toward you....
on the lower right side, under the lip is a ~1/4 inch wide bump...that corresponds with same 1/4 inch slot in rum of HEI..that is the correct orientation for cap on dist. body....
now timing, rotor button orientation and plug wire location is another story...
Thanks for your reply Gene. I guess my main concern here is where should the connector bulge point when installed? Right now it points directly at the rear making interference with the shield. The vacuum servo is centered between the right side wire support loom and the vacuum port on the intake manifold. Also the connector wires from the distributor will not reach the connector bulge on the cap.
Okay, now it looks like I have solved my problem. Looked up the numbers for my distributor and found it is for a 6 cylinder. I guess that explains why everything is dis-oriented. This car was completely apart for 15 years when I bought it, think I'm going to have to find the seller and hit him really hard once or twice (just kidding). I guess I'll be looking for a distributor now, thinking about one for the L-82 for the better performance curve. :mad
I don't think I'll ever be able to live this one down. Of all the knuckle headed things I have done, and not being able to figure this out right away. Almost got into it with the auto parts guy, but he was right. But this is the way this entire project has gone. Nothing on this car was any good, don't think the car could have been driven anywhere without being pushed or towed. Probably should have just parted it out when I first bought it, but maybe now there won't be too many more set-backs.
Don't feel too bad. After I first bought my '81, I got a flat rear tire, and when I went to install the spare that came with the vette, I discovered it wouldn't go on / fit the vette wheel hub, after some choice words, and a drive to local tire store, I discovered that some idiot had put a FORD rim in the '81 as the spare..........go figure! Got rid of the that F___ part quickly and replaced with a GM 15" rim.
Big fish, don't take my ribbing too seriously, man if I told of some of MY goofs over the decades...I"d really look like a fool...course then again even the dammed get lucky, and something gets pulled off that's got NO right...
