How can I tell what gears are on my 80 (70MPH @ 3200RPM). I'm leaning towards the ZZ4 vs a rebuild of my L-48 w/ 7000R Tranny. I want to ensure my gears will be sufficient.
32000 rpm @ 70 mph sounds like 3.55 gears to me (assuming you have 255/60-15 tires). If you had 3.08 gears, it would be more like 2750 rpm @ 70 mph.
This is based on data calculated at smokemup.com, and includes 2.5% torque converter slippage. Originally I didn't include slippage and erroneously thought I had 3.70 gears... :smash:
The only gear available in 1980 was 3.07. The hole differential his different than 1979 and below. This one his the same as to 1982. The others ratio that were available in 1981 and 1982 are 2.87 and 2.72. If you want to be sure, just put the rear of your car on jackstand and draw a line on your driveshaft and a line on your wheel. Count the number of turn of the wheel vs one turn on the driveshaft. It should be 3 giving 3.07. If it's more, then the gear and pinion have been replaced with 3.23, 3.55 or else.
The speedometer and RPM are often off so that way ain't really precise.
