Default '72 Dash pad skins

OK, I have an old baked out '72 dash pad as a core...I peeled off the old cracked out baked up vinyl,,but problem seems to be the padding foam under it is full of air holes where it was sprayed in/on...I need to fill those in, I presume with something to smooth it out for additon of new vinyl...
so I was thinking of RTV and a putty knife...wonder if there is aythng better...

and what to use for applying a new skin??? seems most of them don't go on too well, any ideas as to why???

I think 300 bux for a new dash pad is silly....

I'm eventhinking of wrapping it with cloth then yard goods vinyl heated up to stretch as necessary....anyone try this, and how does it work out...I know that fake stitching will be eliminated,...such is life....

Don't know if you've already purchased the skin but the best way to go for a professional look is with a new dash pad.

I tried doing the skin thing on my original pad and couldn't get it to look right.

I ended up throwing in the towel and spending the $300 and going for the new dash pad.

If you can't get the old padding smooth the skin will never be quite right. Keep in mind the sun will continue the backing process long after you get done.

Maybe someone has had better luck with the skin and can help here. Good luck.

Try the Corvette America site and go to the NQP (not quite perfect) area, most guys have said that they cannot find the flaw, and will save you $$.

I just bought a NQP from Corvette America for $199. The box read "small hole on ear". The hole was a pin hole completely unnoticable unless you knew where to look. I installed the pad today - heated it up a little with a heat gun (carefully!) and it popped right in. I really think they are a great deal if you can get one in your year/color and the flaw is minor. Just a thought.

You'll have to get a new pad now that you peeled off the old top.I used a dash skin and you have to leave the old one on for it to fit right.Mine fit fine and looks great.
