Some people put the floor jack under the 3rd member (with a wood block). I usually do one side at a time, from the side of the car and place the stands just behind the doors.

That's why I ask, because the manual says to jack the rear (as well as the front) from the side at a specific location, I just wonder where you place the jack so that when jack it up, you can set the jack stand at the proper position on the frame.

If I understand what you're asking, I usually put the jack on the inner edge (towards the center of the car) of the cross hatched section and the jack stand on the outer edge http://users.erols.com/jerryp58/corvette/jackpts.jpg . It's a tight fit with the hydrualic floor jack, but I think it works OK.
