Default Help with engine numbers Please

Friend just bought a 66 with the following engine in it. Need some help trying to figure out what he has.
Casting number 3963512 so I know its a BB 427 or 454. Owner said he thought it had a 454 in it.
Has another casting number: 8 Hi Perf
K PA 58
On the vin pad 10316CRV
In the back by bel housing it has the following: L 17 8

Was this some type of Truck replacement block?

Alum intake# 988082
Thanks Ray

All I can find in my book is the block is a 69-71 big block, 427 or 454. Vin crv doesn't equate to any vette blocks I can find, closest was crj, problably chevelle block would be my quess. Hope someone else can help more.

Ray,
You may have something good there. My data show the CRV suffix as being a 1970 Chevelle 454ci/450hp - LS-6 - with manual trans

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the CRV is a 1970 Chevelle 454 / 450 hp 11.25:1 compression motor. Maybe someone else can help you on the date codes!

Tom, I thought LS-6 myself but the block cast L-17 68 seems to early for a 1970 motor, what do you think

I agree, Dec 17 1968 seems very early for a 70 motor, basicly skipped over the 69 model year. Is the VIN deritive also stamped on the stamp pad? That could help confirm the year. Could always be a block that was way in the back and did not get pulled for assembly until the 70 model year.
