just installed edelbrock performer package on my b-block,heads ,intake, cam and carb.Got it all set to start,no go.I found no compression while cranking, dbl checked valve adjustment,it was good.Removed rockers from that cyl ,with valves closed comp. was fine.I got crane rollers checked the travel over the valve stem, it was good. pulling my hair out help!!!!
I don't want to insult you, but: Did you degree the cam, or at least line up the timing marks when you installed the timing chain? It sounds like you have a valve open while the piston is moving up. If your cam is significantly off, that could happen.
Distributor being off wouldn't affect compression (although it would make it hard to start).

Re: Motor Problems Help!!! (C-3 454)
Based on what you said, you had good compression with the rocker arms removed and yet you have no compression with them installed (and thus the valves operating), I would guess that the valves are adjusted incorrectly and one (or both ??) are not closing all the way.
Also, I was alittle confused... was this on just one cylinder or did you do the test on only one cylinder but the problem was on all of them.
Lastly, please don't pull your hair out. You'll end up looking like me.
As far as lineing the cam and crank up i'm sure i did it right, done it before.Even so the valves should close at some point or hit the piston.I removed right bank and head is fine, valves not bent.Of course you always secound guess youself when problems arise.
thanks
Even so the valves should close at some point or hit the piston.
Not necessarily. It depends on what kind of pistons you have and how much lift your cam has. For example, I can put my pistons at TDC and max valve lift (manually, of course), and I still have clearance between the valves and pistons. I also checked valve to piston clearance in conjunction with the timing setup (also done with a degree wheel), and at the point of closest approach there is quite a bit of clearance. Depends on your setup.
I'm not by far an engine expert, but if you're getting compression with the rockers off, and none with the rockers on, and your rockers are rolling across the valve tips correctly, then as far as I know there's only two things that can cause it: 1. either your valves are not closing due to the valve adjustment, or 2. your valve timing relative to piston movement is off.
I'd suggest you degree your cam - it could be that your timing gear got the lineup mark punched in the wrong place. Stranger things have happened.
