Default what is wrong

hello all having problems with my 74. 350 1850-2 holly carb hei distributor new plugs and taylor wires gaped at .045. timming set to initial 15 900 rpms idle and total with vacume on is 38-40. at 2500 rpms

problem carb recently rebuilt car starts right up but will not idle. Try to keep it at 1500 let off gas starts to die give it gas then have a carb backfire every so often. Looks as if the electric choke is openning to soon get a backfire through the carb every once in a while. Is this a lean carb due to choke not working.
Once car is warmed up runs great temp stay low and no stubbling or backfires. When it sits for a while car runs rough again until warm.

I pulled the plugs and they look good i am afraid that it is running to lean all the time or is it just a cold idle choke problem.

is this the choke the timmimg or a cobination of both? thank you all for your help.

My Holley carb does not have a choke plate and does the same thing until it reaches operating temp......then everything is perfect. Set the choke adjustment so that it takes at least 5 minutes for the choke plate to fully open on a 50*F day.

Got tired of jacking with my 69 and modernized it with an Edelbrock Pro-Flow EFI and Mallory SSI about a year ago. I no longer have issues with starting when cold or warm, and engines idles well at all temps. Engine never bogs down and performance including acceleration from 0-60 and 1/4 mile greatly improved along with an increase of around 3 MPG.

Initially I purchased a (rebuilt by Holley) Quadrajet and the issues increased to a point of backfiring when running down the rode at highway speeds. I sent it back and put the original Quadrajet back on for while and I had planned to send it out to Lars for rebuilding. But back in January I ran across the barely used EFI and SSI on Craigslist for a very good price ($800). I picked them up and installed them along with a set of Headman Headers and the car runs completely different. I would say this is by far the best mods I have ever done on the car.

If you want to resolve these issues forever and have the funds I would highly suggest checking into EFI. Of course that is my opinion and you will get lot of other opinions on this subject I am sure.

Good Luck,
Kenneth

Yes I was thinking of efi but trying to keep the stock look. Plus I like the four barrel. Played with electric choke today started better no backfires through carb but still not there no idle had to feather gas until it warmed up. Ran like a monster when warmed up. So much fun to drive. Thanks for all the post today still looking for any other suggestions on my timming or choke issues. Thanks

Most recommend timing all in by 3000 rpm, or less, equal to 36* W/O vacuum advance hooked up.

Will try and reset timming to see if that helps. Thank you
