Dont know if this is a stupid question or not...but what gives the L-82 engine so much more power than the L-48? And how much HP/torque do each of them have throughout the years the L82 was produced?
Also wondering how much HP the 454 in 70 had.
Thanks guys :jester
I know the 454's better then the 350's but the LS-5 was the top 454 in 70 with 390 gross horsepower, 71 was 365hp gross for the LS-5 and 425hp gross for the LS-6, 72 was 270hp net for the LS-5, 73 was 275hp net for the LS-4, and 270 net for the LS-4 in 74. The L-82 in 73 was rated at 250 horse I think it was also the same rating in 74 but I might be wrong.
The L82 had a much stronger bottom end and internals, but that does not create HP, just makes for a stronger engine. HP comes from higher compression, bigger valves, stronger cam, and bigger exhaust pipes.
In 73 & 74 the L82 was 250 Net HP. In 75 it dropped to 205 due to emissions and the additon of cat converters. Then the HP started back up, 76=210, 77=210, 78=220, 79=225, 80=230. Torque was 285 ft lbs for 73 and 74, not sure about the other years.
As a side note, the 250 hp of 73/74 was not again exceded by a Vette classic small block until the new LT1 came out in '92 at 300 hp.
