How hard/expensive would it be to put a new (or used..I should be saying 'diffrent') transmission in that is a 4 speed auto in replacement for my 3 speed auto? I had been planning to put 3.70 gears in, but after reading how high the rpms guys have been running with the 3 speed I don't really like that idea. I travel alot (right around 800miles/month) so I want to keep the car in good condition.
Also with the car I'm throwing a supercharger onto it soon, so a transmission that can handle higher HP would be nice.

I don't know too much about Automatic/Stick conversions. I recently had a Tremec TKO 5-speed installed. The transmission is rated 525 ft/lbs or torque!!! Including my mechanics labor for the install + shortening the driveshaft - my total cost was less than $3000. This transmission works best with 3.08 or 3.36 gears because of the 3.27 first gear!!
Re: Just thinking...new transmission.. (GrandSportC3)
no..I want to keep it all automatic. I have a shift kit in the 3spd and really enjoy that...it's great for daily driving around town. I would like this exact same setup but an additional gear to lower them all plus one for highway. know what I mean?
Joe- this should help you out, a 200r4 or 700r4 will work and both are not hard conversions they just require a little thought before you start. I have a fairly stout 383 and a 700r4 and have no problems. If you'd like to check it out I'll email you my number and I'll probably be down in Venice sometime next week.
Re: Just thinking...new transmission.. (C3 Shark Tank)
I have alot of work to do first on it...I was just thinking/dreaming of what else I would have to do. There is plent, however, that I'll probably need help with on the vette. How far away do you live?
Don't dream about this one! Remember that Chevy started putting 4-speed autos in Vettes starting in '81. And there's a reason why...quite frankly it should have been done years before that, but in the 70s most automakers were trying to get emissions under control. Then when CAFE gas mileage limits hit, they had no choice but to start installing the OD autos. Before that the autmakers were simply too darn cheap to stick them in! :yesnod:

Re: Just thinking...new transmission.. (JoeZ)
If you gotta replace the existing tranny I certainly would recommend an upgrade to a 4 speed auto.
In the restoration of my 73, I kept the 3 speed auto cause it was one of the first thing to replace and I didn't know any better. That was over 2 years ago and I wish I knew how easy the upgrade would be...
Easy being the from the experiences and testimonials of the folks here on the forum that made the switch. Hint hint :yesnod: :yesnod:
