I am to the point in my resto where I have to break down and buy the cow. :cry
My rear is a '68 HD 4.11. Obviously I want a higher gear, but I will have to replace the 4 series posi unit with a three series to install higher gears...
Any ideas to keep my costs down? Bairs and some others want close to a grand to replce and rebuild using my case (with the correct date and ident code).
Who can recommend a rebuilder with quality work and reasonable$$
I did my own but I have seen from about 250 to 500 to have the rear rebuilt. 1000 sounds very high. 3 series carriers are easy to find the 4 series are the tough ones to get.
topless68,
I have a guy up here (Wisconsin) who is both reasonable and reliable but then you have UPS both ways. If your interested I have two freshly rebuilt rear ends a 3.5 and a 3.7 about $800 your choice +UPS (one way), that way you can keep your 4.11 for a "rainy day". The problem is nobody (at least no one with any $$$ I know) wants a 4.11. You can e-mail me direct if your interested. ...redvetracr
Art at Van Steel did mine, highly recommended and for what I thought was a reasonable price compared to others I checked. But I didn't need to buy a new unit like you do.
mike cane of cane's automotive in quincy,il, $200 labor, i bought the parts for $400 and removed diff from car & re-installed it, he did the work. parts breakdown as follows, $200 Drivetrain Specialist in Michigan, new bearings, seals, posi pak. $200 to Bairs for 2 rebuilt axle yokes. $200 for mike's labor. $600 total. if your're going to change rear gears, add about $250 to $275. i'd say if you got somebody to do it for $1000, that's a fair price, maybe $100 to high.
I just did this on my 4.11-equipped 72 LT1. The $1000 sounds a little high but it is right there with the numbers I found. You will need to switch the positraction carrier as you noted and then the gear set, posi clutches and labor. I talked to Bairs and Van Steel.
My differential was rebuilt by Harvey Jacobs of Jacob's Corvette (Pittsburgh, PA area) and I used my original case plus new innards. Give him a call and tell him I sent you. All he does is differentilals, transmissions, and trailing arms.
Bair's charges $495 for a good, thorough rebuild using the existing carrier and gears. If you want to swap away from the 4-series carrier and new gears that's where the cost increase is. I can see that getting close to $1000.
