Live in Kalifornia 
I have a 79 Vette up for smog. She idles and smells of gas. I changed the oil last week and noticed the charcoal canister reeks of gas. I do my oil changes and never smelled gas up there like that. I want to replace it. Nobody makes a new one. I see them for I believe 77, 80, and 81. Will any of them fit? I don't want used.

I would check all the vacuum lines, esp the ones to the canister first. If they are bad the canister will not purge properly. Also the winter gas formulations might give off more fumes.
Check the carb at the fuel filter for seepage, and the fuel lines at the fuel pump.
