Default Roller Cam for a 400 sbc

Hey guys,

Im looking for recommendations for a cam on a 400 +0.20 that I have being built right now The motor will be 11:1 with the heads planned for the motor. For the heads (65 cc Edelbrock e-tec200) I have beehive Z28 springs, COMP Ultra gold 1.6 rockers, eldelbrock retrofit roller lifters, so I am looking to get a roller cam. Talking to the builder we are looking to get in the 400-425 hp range with an expected 450 tq. The car (originally l-82, but motor was replaced with a goodwrench 260 hp motor) and has a 4 speed with 3.08 rear end.

Obviously Im looking for something that is fun to drive, but the car will be used for street use only, potentially the occasion hour long drive. I dont want to worry too much about vacuum either. If people have from proven combo's awesome. I'm sure I can move the lifters pretty easily, but I would prefer to go with the roller cam.

Thanks!

11:1 might be a bit high, unless you run a large amount of overlap in the cam...

I recently built a 406 (.030 over 400) for my Camaro...compression is 10.03:1, with 64 cc (cc'd at 65-65.5) Dart Iron Eagle heads...

I used the following roller cam kit form Comp Cams: Cam Kit: K12-432-8
If you already have the retro lifters and springs, then you'll only need the cam (XR282HR-10).

Desktop dyno says my combination makes 461 HP and 515 lbs of torque...

Cam sounds great, and makes about 9" of vacuum @ idle (800) as advertised...not sure if that will be sufficient for a vette, but it is a great running street motor!!

The link below is the Dyno comp sheet on a 356 (350, .040)

XR282HR-10 is the most cam I would use with 3.07 gearing even with the 4-speed. You may have to really get a good hole shot with the 4-speed to get into the power band. I saw a review on Summit where a guy with a 700R4 had to step to a 3000rpm stall converter.

For reference, I run the XR272HR-10 with a 700R4 and 3.54 gears. It literally lights the tires from a dead (idle) stop.

If it were me... I would use my cam with those 3.07's. If you were to go with more gear and the 4-speed, then, the XR282HR-10. The 282HR is more a top-end vs. low and mid-range cam. With the right parts, you can still get to your hp goal and be streetable.

Have you considered Comp's tech line for guidance?

I do run a 3.73 gear (and a Muncie M20) with that cam, but it does have very good manners down low...the RPM range is not as high as you think it is to get into the powerband...

I would definitely research a bit, though--the tech line is a very good idea...

Z28 springs won't work for long with a roller cam capable of supporting an 11 to 1 404 CI. Get the right springs for your cam.
