I am having problems replacing my alternator belt because I cannot move the alternator enough in the adjustable slot to get the belt on because my valve covers are in the way. My '75 has the original alternator but the engine is now a ZZZ. There must be some way to get this belt on other than having to take the alternator completely off the bracket? Can someone please offer some advice to a frustrated guy? :D
That is a typical problem with aftermarket parts, very pickey as to just which ones will fit in a certain application....another belt, slightly larger, and pray you have enough room to widen it out on the existing brackets...if not, you got to replace valve covers....
I have even seen guys cut hell out of cast tall valve covers for clearance of some item, looks likt sh it IMO....
for things like Valve covers especially, and accessory drives/pumps etc.. that's why I stick with stock...justno choice....
I've dealt with this recently and I had to remove the alternator completely to install the belt. That's with a belt that was longer than what the computer at the autoparts store said I needed. If you go too long you won't have enough adjustment to get it tight.
On my 72 ... I simply kept trying different belts until I found the right one. When I get home, I can give you the belt number I use ... it should work for you as well.
Trial and error. It took me a long time and many trips to find the correct belt. 52.5 inches = too small ; 53.5 = too big ; 53 = just right. I am going to have to deal with it again when I decide to put my PS back on.
I wouldn't follow my lead. Mine is a BB and I think you said that your's is a SB. It might be a 53 but chances are that you will have to do some trial and error.
