Help! hOW DO I REPLACE THE HEATER CORE IN A 1979 WITH AIR? I HAVE STARTED TAKING THE BOX OUT FROM INSIDE THE CAR BUT SOMETHING SEEMS TO BE HOLDING THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE. IS THERE A BOLT THAT I HAVE TO REMOVE FROM OUTSIDE? I DID HAVE TO REMOVE A NUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE TOP LEFT.
I did this about a month ago on my '78. I ran into the same exact problem. However, I don't know that I can give a solid answer because I just kept uncrewing anything near that area.
First, I assume you've unhooked the heater hoses and removed the clamps? Number one thing to get caught.
Second, there were some really obscure bolts hiding out underneath the evaporator housing. You can get to them from under the car and they go through the evap housing and into the firewall.
Again, not sure which one was actually holding anything on, but once I did all of that, it slipped right out (after angling it different ways)
The page for the '79 is sans AC, but there's a '70 with AC showing how to take it out through the interior.
When you say right, do you mean lower driver side or passenger side? The core has to come loose on the passenger side first.
You'll have to take out all the nuts from the heater distributor studs, but I can't remember- I'd have to go look to see how many there are on the engine side.
You will find a series of the pics here. My descriptive album was lost when Photopoint went bankrupt. I still have the original pics on my hard drive but not as an album. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=272011
thanks for the help. Because the hoses for the heater core with air come from underneath the car I just had to raise the box while pulling it out. I just hope it goes back together.
