Abover Average Oil Consumption on Big Block
Hello All,
Troubleshooting an oil issue with a 1973 454 engine.
I do not know what has been done to engine, but it is stamps for a 73 454. It runs like there have been upgrades as it does feel like a 270 engine.
Bought Corvette a few years ago and have rebuilt the carb and put a 1969 390 HP alum intake and redid distributor with Breakerless SE to remove points.
The issue i am having is that about every tank of gas i am burning up to a quart of oil. When i stand on it i am getting a good cloud of black/blue smoke behind the car as well.
I did a compression test and cylinders are registering good. Like i said i replaced the intake so its not sucking oil there.
A couple of things to note. The oil pressure always reads high, pegged when you are on driving and over 40 when at idle.
I have a PCV running from DS valve cover and the PS runs into the air filter.
I was talk recently to try switching to a breather on other Valve Covers to see what that does. I am also wondering about the high oil pressure and if that has anything to do with this.

My 69 427 has never been out of the car and was using oil. Valve seals.... It now goes through a quart in about 2500 miles and seals are cheaper than the oil.
