My car has always had squeaking brakes since I got it a couple of months ago, but recently they'll often stop squeaking for a few hours. Almost invariably, the brakes are really weak when they're quiet, but ok otherwise. They won't lock up at all that way.
They squeak when they are cool? City driving? Corvette brake pads are in constant contact with the rotors and generally love heat in moderation. They do not get that in the city. Too much stop-and-go. On the highway they get that heat. And do not squeak. Am I close to the symptoms?
I think your symptoms match what I used to get. The squeaks would never go away for long (I'm not on the highway much), but they'd always be strong. I recently took the car out to some windy country roads where I pushed it quite hard. I got A LOT of brake fade, and they stopped squeaking until I got back to city driving. Since then, though, I've had them be quiet and weak for long periods of time for no apparent reason. Did I wear out something?
I have to agree with Paul in part, but in the city the brakes are also hot because of the constant braking. But what seems to be the problem is the brake pads, there are some brands that make some noiose and others that don't. To be sure check the amount of material you got left and try making some hard braking, I mean really hard like from 100's to 0, in order to seat better the pads and then they might stop squeaking, but it all depends. my.02
I have noticed that if I brake hard in the City (late brake the stop) and give em some good pressure they tend to not squeal. When Im light on them they squeal like mad, drives me nutz.
It takes heat, and I think thats the right answer. When on the highway its not as noticeable. I think the pad material has alot to do with it.
Thanks for the advice. I'll check the material left. I wasn't really concerned with the squeaks so much though. Heavy braking seems to have quietted the brakes, but killed their effectiveness too.
Go to Muskegon Brakes and get their organic pads. About $20.00 for four wheels. The problem will disappear immediately. Do not fool about about with pad back patches, shaving this and that, etc. Get the organic pads. http://www.muskegonbrake.com/
I'd just like to say I'm glad my breaks don't sqeak! =) Sounds like your car is falling apart. Around here though, when people's break sqeaks they say it's from all the dust/dirt that was on the road from the winter.
