Several months ago all my rings broke on my 72 I had just purchased. When rebuilding it, I decided to go the stroker route. In about a week I will FINALLY be getting the engine back from the shop.
Its a 383, Comp Cams 274 cam, probally going with sportman IIs for about 9.5 compression. Car has full exhaust, headers, single plane Torker II, and ingintion system as well.
I can't wait to get this thing running. Anybody have a similiar setup- how much power are you making? I still have to install the heads and drop the engine back in- are their any special instructions or tips for this?
I hadn't planned on getting the heads ported- so eager to get the engine finished I don't want to have to wait for a shop to do the porting. As for power, most 383 buildups with my components seem to be from 370-420 hp, depending on cam. Im hoping to be close to 400.
Unless the sportsman II have changed their chamber design I would opt for something like "Dart Iron eagles" with angle plugs. Figure out final compression for low 10's with .040 or so quench.
Also for the intake - Why go with such an old design. Weiand stealth or smaller team G's
Im going with the Sportsman IIs because I told the engine shop my goal of 400hp, and they said I could get it with those heads. Yes I know they aren't the best, but they will allow me to reach my goals.
Same with the intake- I already had it and it will allow me to make the numbers I want. You know, you can always spend an extra hundred here and there to get something a little better, but Im trying to stick to my HP goals as well as my budget. I can't see any reason why I would need over 400hp for my applications, so why spend more. Of course in a year or two I'll be bitten by the horsepower bug again and will be looking to upgrade.
Andrew,
I know how you feel wanting to get it running again. I have built my motor but still have the body off. All I can do is push it outside and fire it up..Man this thing rumbles and tachs up in a instant..
I really don't know what kind of numbers I will put up with this stroker motor but it should be plenty sweet on the street. I only went with a comp 268H cam but it should give me the power where I want it.

I had 355 ci with both the 272 and 278 crane powermax H - flat tappet. wonderful running and OK vacumm with 1.6 rockers. 6500+ with my setup. Then later when I needed a motor to get me by till I built a good one I bought a Cheapo XE274 comp cams 355 ci short block and strapped on my big heads and single plane intake. It sounded more roudy, but I noticed that i had to change the jetting and it was softer all over than the 278 Crane It was kind of hard to say for sure because i had a roller motor just before the 274 and i never went drag racing to compare real time slips.
I would think that with your lower compression You need a cam to build pressure
