whats the best one on the market for $450 or less?
Do searches under Lincoln Mark VIII, Taurus 3.8 and Ford Focus. All of these have been successfully installed and all move a LOT of air. You may also want to look at the Delta Current Control website. DCC makes pulse width modulation (PWM) controllers that seem to last and people seem to be happy with. All of it can be had within your budget.
I installed a Taurus fan with my big block conversion three years ago and on low speed it keeps the rat motor cool. With the fan, mounting materials, thermostat, relays, and wire, it cost me about $100
Lots of searching and reading will net you a vast amount of information. Lots of members have done it with success and big big smiles on their faces. I even have my info on here somewhere. Mine was a budget one using a 454 from a mobile home. Only snag I had was I had put the motor in and went to bolt the flexplate up to the torque converter realizing at that time I had forgotten to make sure I had the dual pattern flexplate. Had to pull it back out and install the correct one. Everything else was a pc of cake. I also used late 60's era aftermarket pulleys and brackets, except for the p/s pulley which I used a double pulley and it lined up fine. And the top alt bracket, was the original s/b with a spacer. Everything lined up perfect once I figured the right belts to use. If you have the money, I would suggest getting all the brackets and pulleys they used when they installed the 454 in the 74 corvettes, you cant go wrong going that route.

This is a Flex o lite fan but now it's a summit racing fan sold under their name for around $300.
It fits perfect and works great! I would strongly suggest upgrading the alternator but it's not necessary. I'm still running stock 85 amp with AC.
I had a SPAL 16" fan on my SBC setup before the car was torn down. It worked great just make sure you have a good charging system. When I am done rebuilding the car I have a dual Spal fan setup to go in for the BBC I am building.
