Its been about 4 months since the fiasco started. For those that don't remember I lost a horizontal tie bar on one of my roller cam lifters which trashed the cam and put a ton of metal into the motor.
I ended up sending the cam back to Comp Cams with instructions to call me when they found out what was wrong and so I could pick out a new grind to go into the 406 I thought I was going to have to build. Well 3 weeks later a box shows up on the door step with a new cam and lifters in it. I called Comp Cams and was upset that no one had called me. I asked if I could return the cam/lister set for a credit and they said yes. So I shipped it back to them and got a $535 credit to my charge account. I still have not talked to anyone there who knows anything about why the lifters failed. I ended up putting a $100 LT-1 solid lifter cam set in the car and the motor seems to be holding up well. I think that I am pretty much done with Competition Cams. Their level of product quality and customer service are just not up to par for the cost of their product. Even before I installed this roller cam I had to sent back one of the roller lifter pairs for a seized roller wheel. This is brand new merchandise, how could they let this kind of stuff get past quality control ? Sorry Comp Cams but no more for this customer.
Re: Update on Comp Cams Roller Cam Failure (dman535)
let's connect the dots.
Roller lifters are scarce. Makers have closed.
Why is that? Great products at a good price? NO.
Parts fail, users like CC stop buying junk, so they close. CC gives back your money and you complain they did not tell you the sob story?
Did you cal CC and ask to talk to the owner?
If they tell a convincing sob story will you buy a CC cam again? Sure we would all like the jucy details, but getting back your money is pretty darn good in my book.
Re: Update on Comp Cams Roller Cam Failure (dman535)
It would interesting to find out how many products comp cams actually makes.
The reason for your failure was your using heads with an exhaust cross over port. ;) I have not had heads like that in many many years and nothing seems to break.
Re: Update on Comp Cams Roller Cam Failure (gkull)
i agree with Matt. any company willing to give a full refund, even after sending you a new cam is okey in my book. i have talked to comp cams and they have a good tech line. try calling that line.
Re: Update on Comp Cams Roller Cam Failure (QuickVet)
Matt - was not askling for a sob story, was going to exchange the 350 cam for something that would work in a 406. They never contacted me about it. I was tired of chasing them for someone to talk to, they never responding to any of my communication. Besides the car is running ok with the LT-1 cam and I could use the cash.
I invested over $600 in a roller cam setup only to have it fail in 8000 miles, almost costing me my engine. Not sure that I will give comp cams another run.
Gkull- The crossover passage in these heads is cast shut :)
Re: Update on Comp Cams Roller Cam Failure (dman535)
I have been running a Comp Cams Hydraulic Roller in my 68 Rally Sport Camaro for 8 years. Have not had a bit of trouble with it. It is not a super radical cam though. .525 lift single pattern cam with 280 duration. I have been very happy with it. I know it stinks when things break. It drives me carzy. Sometimes we also need to remember what we are putting these motors through and realize that things are going to break. I hate that though. Hopefully they will take care of you. If not I would go somewhere else.
