Default Gear ratios?

My current 3.55 rear end is starting to howl quite a bit and I'm looking to replace it with something that would be more suitable for hiway driving (I'm not real keen on 3500 RPMs @ 70 MPH).
Any suggestions as what to go to in order to lower the RPMs some without sacrificing much performance?

3.08s, you could probably find someone who would be willing to trade straight across. good luck.

3.36 gives you 3000 rpm at 70mph. Little better.

Yup, 3.08s.

Assuming a 1:1 final drive ratio (like "D" with a TH350), and tires like 245-60s, you'll be turning over about 3,000 RPM at 80 MPH.

Do you have automatic or manual tranny? If auto tranny is ok for you then you could switch to 4spd auto with O/D like a 200R4 or 700R4. Get more tQ from the hole plus reduced highway rpms. Best of both worlds. I have 3.90 gear and a 26" dia tire and I rev only 2250@ 65mph with verter locked in 4th gear. 2300rpm@70mph.

IF your gearset is in fact bad, yeh going to what you want is smart...
BUT no gearset change other than 411 to 308 is going to give you the rpm drop worth the money....like an overdrive with decent ratio...say .70 at minimum...

it's just math...your drop from 355 to 308 is allmost meaningless...400 rpm's...
no notice on fuel, noise....hardly worth the bother....

Yep. I'd replace the gears with the same ratio and consider getting a TH700.

I'm doing the 200-4R swap, right here in San Antonio! Pretty soon you'll be able to take advantage of some experienced mechanics...as soon as they finish mine!

By the way 3500 rpm @ 70 mph sounds high! Mine does 3200 @ 70 with stock 3.55s. What size tires do you have? Your bio photo looks like 225/60-15s -- put some 255/60-15s on there and you'll drop hundred rpm!

I'm running 235/60-15s that measure roughly 25 1/4" in diameter (quite a bit of rubber left on them).

How much would say I would be looking to do something like you suggest in swapping out the tranny?
