What are some possible things that woudl cause me to lose ALL power steering? When I broke down on Friday morning I had PS. Had it towed home Friday and fixed a faulty fuel line. Went to drive it today and had no PS. Have plenty of fluid, no leaks, belt is fine, no noise from the pump, the hoses and valve are less than 2 months old. If the hoses had been put on wrong two months ago, I would have known then, correct?
I have been racking my trying to figure out the problem today......
HEY BSOWA; I HOPE YOUR DAY GETS BETTER!! ( and your VETTE. ) COULD POSSIBLY BE THAT THE TOW-TRUCK TOWING ANGLE GOT AIR INTO YOUR P S PUMP. TRY PUTTING YOUR FRONT END ON JACK-STANDS AND START THE CAR, ROTATE STERRING WHEEL LEFT TO RIGHT ( lock to lock several times)
AND THAT SHOULD REMOVE ANY AIR THAT MAY HAVE GOTTEN INTO THE LINES. IT'S LIKE YOU ARE BLEEDING THE SYSTEM.
GOOD LUCK, GENE :smash:
I really can't associate your fuel problem with anything that could go wrong with your power steering system. When you try and steer with the car stopped, can you hear any noise from the pump? As you near full lock, you should at least hear the pump straining.
Can you grab the pulley and try and move the pulley and pump drive shaft in and out of the pump? It is possible that the pump drive shaft is broken inside the pump. This will mean that the v-belt may be the only thing holding the pulley and drive shaft in place.
If you remove the high pressure power steering line from the back of the pump, then unscrew the discharge fitting from the back of the pump. Behind the fitting there is a plunger with a spring behind it. You should be able to reach in with a small screwdriver and press on the plunger. It should smoothly slide back against the spring. If it sticks, it could be preventing sufficient flow out of the pump.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm gong to mess with it when I get off work tonight. Hopefully one of these will work.
If not I'm going to take it to midas in the morning, try to have them diagnosis it, then TRY to do he work myself.
Since I told myslef I wanted to try to do all the work myslef on this car (even though I know next to nothing about cars), it's like someone keeps playing a trick on me.....everytime I fix something myself and get excited, something else more complicated goes bad......
Welcome to Corvette ownership! Don't worry, it'll get better. Sounds to me like you bought a car that had been sitting a while, or was used very little...
By the way, once you get all the bugs out, it doesn't stop...the you just start doing upgrades!!! :yesnod:
