Back-drive lever not being nice
Pulling the t&t column from my 75. Everything is disconnected including the back drive cable. Only bolts left are the column to dash bolts. The "u" plate is still in place with the loose bolt out. The back drive lever won't roll straight up. I've had this column out before but it's been a few years---don't remember this problem before. I have read Jim's papers but I must be doing something wrong. Oh, I've tried the key in all positions just in case.

Backdrive lever position
You first have to remove the plate from the engine compartment. One bolt is loose the other is welded to the plate. You need to remove both nuts from the driver side of the dash. With the plate removed, place the backdrive lever in the full UP position. There is a cutout in the dash panel that will allow the backdrive lever to pass through as you pull the steering column back into the driver compartment.

Jim, The plate is loose but won't move the stud out of the firewall because the back drive is covering it from the 8 to 10 o'clock position. i did lnot want to pry on it but I wil be a little more forceful.
