If you had a 6 link without the retaining ring the inner axles slid right out. No need to pull the whole rearend :) Another excuse to start a new project.
Well, guys, don't mean to be raining on Toms' parade there, but to me that 1/4 inch flange is way too thin to be taking the axial loading with also torque applied, soon as it broke from cornering....got stressed, whatever....the thing spun itself out....
I can't see even 3/8 inch of steel being strong enough...look at the stock diff yokes, and see the strength necessary around that shaft...get an idea of the loading,...not look at the force applied on that outer flange with only 1/4-3/8 of steel and the amount of deflection around the shaft....
now if the car is a grag only machine....it's probably ok for that useage....
somehow, I think the design is lacking...needs more steel....
Keep in mind I"m not trying to pan a good vendor ersatz, but from what I see in the pictures....that IMO.....
Gordon it was a rolling power on acceleration when it broke. I was rolling in 1st gear lightly giving it gas, then I :smash: the gas, the tires broke loose & BANG it broke. I didn't shock the drivetrain so to speak as it was already loaded.
Norval you bring up a very good point. I wish someone here in the states would offer a 6 link kit. It seems just the people in other parts of the world are talented enough to make it happen (I certainly am not that talented ;) ). I'm in the process of ordering halfshaft safety loops for the "While I'm There" or "Just In Case" situations.
That's too bad Mike, good to hear you get new one to replace the broken one. Seems that nothing is bullet proof when you use that Chevy torque the right way :D
Mrvette you bring up a good point, I figured that these axles are much stronger than the stock and have been engineered to take everyday wear & tear. They're advertised as being for abusive situations, which really wasn't the case when this one broke. It's possible that I just had some bad luck and got a defective part. But that's not to say that I have total faith in it not happening again which is why I'm ordering the safety loops for the halfshafts. It damaged my fiberglass spring this time, but could have been much worse. Tom's has got an excellent reputation & I'm not putting them down, just want to lets others know what happened and how their customer service is after the sale (I also had to buy the 30 spline posi in order to use these so this was not a cheap upgrade for me).
get the poly pumpkin mount. I had trouble breaking things till I limited rearend squat.
A real man would have just pulled the half shaft and driven home. :D But then again I don't have tripple AAA My car has never left me along road except for a totally locked upblown motor .
George I have the poly mount. I would have tried to drive it home but for some reason the car wouldn't move with the one side broken. Same thing that happened last year when I broke the axle, with one side broke the posi won't turn the other wheel  . I figured that the old posi was probably just worn, but the new one is suppose to be tuned so I did try and see if Icould drive it ;) .
Wow, that's some serious damage. I would guess it is more a manufacturing/material issue rather than a design problem. This would be especially true given the time in service.
