I finally got rid of the hose from the water pump to the intake. Since I don't use the heater I sealed them with two motor caps (or screws) and I have one less hose to worrie about. When I removed the hose adaptors I found out there is a lot of residues on the engine. I had the radiator cleaned and repaired last year, but I think the bubbas did not flushed the motor. What the best approch to flush my cooling system now? My 74 still over heats with A/C on.
I was thinking of using the Zerex flush kit, any coments? :troll
Re: Help needed to flush the cooling system (de_cat55)
Prestone has a flush that requires running the engine at operating temperature for about 10 minutes. You can get it at Pep Boys. Prestone has a 6 hour flush, but I am hesitant to leave additives in my system for that long.
Re: Help needed to flush the cooling system (VettePower)
I remember reading an article in one of my automotive magazines that talks about the flush kits being caustic to parts of the radiator. You may want to double check that. Also, the same article mentions running soapy water for several days and changing the water until it drains clean. I'll try to find it to be sure. Don't quote me on any of what I just typed as I can't be sure without the article in front of me.
For me flushing the engine is draining the radiator and block almost 10 times last year due to many repair projects. Now when I drain the radiator is comes out clean as can be.
