Default Better Sounding Exhaust

Hey Everyone,

I have a SB with the stock mufflers that exit through the rear and they don't sound very good. Any tips on headers and exhaust combos? I don't want to put side exhausts for fear of leg tattoos and I would have empty exhaust holes in the rear which would look crappy. Any other ideas are welcome I just want it to sound like my previous C6 with Borla Ataks.

I have a few videos of my exhaust currently in my last post of this thread https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c3-tech-performance/3577206-finished-build-of-my-1973-l48.html

I have flowtech long tube headers, 2.5 in exhaust and pypes violator mufflers, they're pretty great

With the firing order/heads on the C6 your Gen 1 will never sound the same

What sound are you after meaning what kind of note?
Tolerate some resonance etc etc?

Thank you everyone for your help!

^^The first car in that link is a c3 that sounds ideal. I want it to have that raspy-ness. And interior drone is okay. Just don't want Magnaflow's to be honest those sound too quiet at idle in my opinion.

Dynomax Ultraflows would give you that.
The oval ones imo little less bassy have a little more "crisp" to them
The welded ones have more deep tone but still got some rasp

Have them on mine, love em! There is resonance (louder at idle too at least in the car) though with the welded ones but at WOT they are pure bliss

Sadly though Im going to put some quieter ones on dont need someone 3 blocks away hearing me if I stand on it a little bit

Hahah! You're gonna miss that if you change them I'm sure. Did you go with headers and larger diameter pipes? Or just the mufflers? Cause all I'm getting online are 2.5ins. I think I have that width already.

Thanks for the reply btw

Ultrfaflows move a TON of air 2.5 is plenty
Yeah not thrilled about making it quiet(er) but maybe I could use the right foot a little more and not draw so much attention. I like cheap insurance

Can always switch back

Ultra Flos and Magnaflows sound very similar, for what it's worth. They're both straight through designs with wool (fiberglass or steel) packing.

Default exhausting

Last summer put a 2&1/2" chambered exhaust system in the 69 with the anemic worn out L48, well needles to say it sounded like a pickup truck with a rusted out exhaust. Well I fixed that; yesterday we started the brand new 427 SBC and do those pipes have a real bark to them. Might even have to add a resonator. T

So I just bought a 74 sb with full length aluminized pipes and magnaflows. NOT my cup of tea. WAY too low and loud...kinda like old glasspacks. What mufflers would sound higher pitched, more hollow sounding and a little quieter like a modern new car sound ?

Rockstar, what is a 74 sb? Do you mean small block? Are you running headers on it?

L-36 with stock mani, 2.5 front pipes and Flowmaster C3 exhaust(Delta 50 muffler. Despite what they advertise the Flowmaster is not a direct fit and customer service sucks. You need to extend front pipes by about 8 in. I had Allens make me a 2.5 in front pipe that was 8 in longer than stock.
