Default Electric fan controller alternate probe location

Accidently posted this in C4 but meant to post here

Hi, after replacing my radiator, and re-installing the electric fan, I accidently yanked out the wires the PO had run to a toggle switch for the fan. Hit the parts store to get new switch and found an adjustable fan controller with probe this one: http://www.etrailer.com/Radiator-Fan...le/D16769.html

it would be nice to have it automatically come on and not use a manual switch, so I bought it.

Here's my question: instead of mounting the probe under the radiator hose, I was thinking of putting it in the unused transmission cooler. I have a stick, so the trans cooler portion of the radiator is not going to be used. I am thinking of putting a plug in the lower cooler outlet, fillint the cooler with oil (or ATF), and putting the probe into the upper cooler inlet, then sealing it up with some RTV or something.

Anyone done this? bad idea? the probe is pretty thin, so I think it will slide in but haven't actually tried yet. just having second thoughts about the radiator hose sealing around the probe. I know there are better kits out there with dedicated sensors, but for $30, I thought this would be a cheap way to go...

just an update for anyone thinking of doing this. it didn't fit.

it does slip right in the radiator hose and with the supplied piece of foam under it, seals up nice and tight.

I give a thumbs up to this setup for those not wanting to spend $150+ for the kits with the sensor and wiring setup for a fan. simple 5 minute install job. comes with all wires, fuse, bracket, etc. and works like a champ.

The specs say its rated for 16 amps...like one fan. If your setup needs more amps you could use this controller to control another relay.

Still nice for $30!!!

I just have one electric fan (in addition to the stock fan on the water pump), so it should work, but yeah, could easily add a 30 amp relay in the mix.
