I rebuilt my own steering box and at first just replaced the bearings, races and seals. It required only hand tools and was easy enough but it didn't do the job. I installed it, tried it, hated it so out it came again and this time I replaced the 3 internal pitman arm bushings. This is beyond most but any machine shop can do this. I reistalled the pitman shaft with around .001 clearance. I also shimmed up the head of the bolt that sticks through the top of the box for .001 clearance. This takes up any up and down motion of the pitman arm.
My box is as new and the steering is comparable to my new dodge truck and wifes new Bonneville.
The old steering can be made to work.

I didn't do my own... had it rebuilt at Tony's Corvette Shop in Gaithersburg, MD. It looks good and it also has a firmer on-center feel. (This was without the steering linkage connected... haven't put the car back on the road yet.)
