Re: Should Ignition and door key be the same? (Markm10431)
The square key fits both doors and ignition on early cars. They changed in the mid seventie to using the round key for the doors. I think the change came in 74 ?? :D

If I were you, JR -
I'd drive that 69 right over to my work in Burlington MA.
Drop the car off, and I will install all the locks for FREE. :yesnod:
The job will only take 2-3 months to complete.
I like the single key idea. If you saw my 4-vehicle key ring - you'd know why.

The square head key worked the ignition and doors up through 73. The round head was the storage compartment, alarm, and spare tire lock. In 74 they changed to the round key also working the door and the square key working only the ignition.

That's what the forum is all about....I have owned seven C-3's over twenty years and I just ate crow on some bad info I gave out on headlights.. :D Seem that you never quit learning when it comes to these cars.
I have a 69 and the square key fits the two doors and the ignition. I will warn everyone though the new GM blanks do not work on the older corvettes. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why new keys did not work in the ignition or doors and they were exact matches. Both old keys that were extremely worn did work. Look closely at the grooves in the keys. The new blanks the three grooves that go down the side of the keys are at least 1/4 inch shorter and the new keys/blanks will not work. I am not sure if anyone has the old type blanks but the ones I have seen and gotten lately have the short grooves. If you use a Dremel tool and grind out the grooves the keys will work every time. I wanted to replace my worn keys and it was a real problem so beware and look at the blanks real close.

Me too. I have 1 door, 1 ignition. 1 tire carrier and 1 for the alarm. One key would be nice, even two.

My '69 uses 2 keys and also mentions 2 keys in my original owner's manual. Square for ignition and door lock, round for all other locks.
No so fast, slick. On the '69, the square GM key works on the door locks and the ignition, the OVAL GM key works on locking rear compartment and tire carrier. The totally different small ROUND key works on the alarm system, if so equipped. 3 Keys, potentially.
