Default Charging question

Hi all

I have a 75 veto with ac & auto

I checked my charging rate while my engine running & no accesories on

The multimeter showed 12Volts, is this right?
It has the original hei ignition system on it.

Also when driving with the lights on, the ammeter gauge shows a little
on the negative side 3 or 4 amps. But without the lights on it's on 0 amps

Is this ok? or should I replace the alternator.
Thanx in advance

A

Just sitting on the shelf, a battery should have 12.6 volts available. When the car is running, I look for about 14.2 volts, that tells me it is charging. Don't automatically condemn the alternator, it could be a loose wire, loose belt, even a bad ground. I think most parts stores will do a free charging system test for you.

Do you have the separate regulator? On my car lack of charging was traced to a loose connection on the regulator.
