I'm going back to original style exhaust and getting rid of my old headers on my 69 L46. I know originally there were no gaskets between heads and manifolds. Is it a good idea to install them anyway? Thanks

In my restore Mark I went with factory GM specs which like you mentioned used no gaskets on the exhaust manifold. Headers do require a gasket due to the much smaller and sometimes thinner flange. Some will even double up the exhaust manifold gaskets for headers depending on the flange fit.

When I bought my 70 L-46 it had original exhaust manifolds without gaskets. It did leak a bit here and there.
I ended up buying a set of Felpro gaskets that came with individual gaskets for #1, #3&5 , #7 cyl and #2, #4&6, #8 cyl. I cut the outside edges of the gaskets down so you can't see them when installed.
If you don't care if the gasket shows, they make a drop in gasket for each side. All you have to do is loosen the exhaust manifold bolts and insert the one piece gasket.

Thanks, I don't care if it shows, so I'll probably go ahead and put them in. I don't want any leaks. Thanks for the help.
