Default LGT-700 5 Speed

I'm very glad to see Silver Sport Transmissions adding the LGT-700 5 speed to their lineup. I got mine from Keisler, never had a problem with them. Not trying to sell anything but this box is rock solid, compact and easy to install. One overdrive gear is plenty for me. I can't imagine needing 6th unless crossing through Montana.

I guess if they proliferate, parts and service will always be around.

The LGT-700 has a 0.70:1 5th, which is roughly between the two gears offered in the TKO 600 (.82, .64) but closer to the 0.64.

I find with my TKO that I'd like to have a -fifth- between 1 and 0.64, but then I'd basically have a T56. 0.70 might be a good compromise. It's a little bit taller than 5th in a tall ratio T56. If I were going to do the outlay all over again, I've said this a few times before, I'd skip the 5-speeds and go 6.

But my TKO has been great after it was cleaned up by Liberty's Gears, and I'm happy with it.

The LGT-700 close ratio has 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, 0.69 gears according to their website. I got the Keisler SS700 which is identical except for a .68 fifth. I'm finding this to be a comfy compromise for my roller cam/carbed gen I setup, 3.70 rear with 26.5" tires. I can keep it between 1900 to 2200 rpm on the highway most of the time in fifth, not bad.

The T56 from American Powertrain has 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1:1, .80, .62 gears. I'd think the .62 is nearly useless in my car unless I had a mild computer controlled motor and plan to take a lot of long distance trips. I'm sure it's great for some applications but I'm guessing it's going to be maybe 20 to 30 lbs heavier than the LGT. I think I made a good choice.

Yeah, I rounded up. I think I'd be a little happier with your gear than the 0.64 I have now. I could use a 0.62 if I was going 60+. I'm running an M4M Q-Jet controlled 400 SBC with a mild (low/mid 220s duration on a 113 LSA) cam and doing just fine in 5th at about 60mph on.

My intent was not to criticize your choice, but I wouldn't go 5-speed again if I was starting from scratch.

I'm probably spoiled because I've owned numerous T56 and TR6060 cars and I definitely miss having a gear between 4th and 5th.

OK with me partner, all opinions welcome here! Some people are probably happy to keep their old T10. I was just pluggin for this unit thinking a lot of readers might have similar needs as I do. I was looking for strong, light and easy to install. Seems like TKOs have a rep for problematic high rpm 2nd-3rd shifts and you have to cut the floor pan to fit in a lot of C2/C3s.

Kind of hated to see Keisler go under after introducing this last year, but in the long run I expect there will be more distributors. It is a smooth piece of hardware.

Yup, mine's from the "new batch" and would not shift at speeds >4000 rpm or so. Some people accused me of not driving it correctly (and I'm guilty of accusing people of that prior to experiencing it for myself), but my car magically started working after the Liberty's treatment (and quite well, I might add - I've never missed a shift since!).

I had to cut the floor pan, but it was because the 75-82 automatic cars have a much different pan vs manual. If I had a manual car, or an earlier car, it would have likely just bolted in.

with the tko, the stock shifter need to be replaced with a steeda shifter.the steeda shifts closer, shorter throws, and 2nd to 3rd gear shifts are perfect.

Depending on the combination a 6th gear can be nice.

I'm running a T-56 Magnum coupled with 4.56 rear gears and 30 inch tires, it works very well with my engine combo (see sig below). The ratios are 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1:1, .80, .63. The beauty about the 6 speed is 5th gear is like an "in-between gear". With the camshaft I'm running (lumpy), the engine is not at its "happiest" at low rpm's. The issue I had with a 5 speed tranny is 5th gear would be too much overdriven for my liking to use for anything other than interstate speeds. I use my 5th gear in what I call "back road" speeds, 45-60 mph. 6th gear is for the interstate; 60+ mph.
This setup gives me the best of both worlds; incredable launches with the 4.56 gears and real nice interstate cruising with fairly low rpms. The motor peaks about 6500 and pulls hard to 7k+ rpms. It launches hard and I have plenty of power in the upper rpm range to utilize the lower gears. In 6th gear I cruise down the interstate at 70 mph turning a little over 2200 rpm.
