Hi Guys,
A u-joint blew on my half shaft(77 vette/4spd). I removed the halfshaft and need to move the car to position the u-joint for removal on the diff. Will the diff still work with just one halfshaft. I need to move the car forward and back under power if possible.
Thanks
Bill
Hi,
The problem is that the car is right against the garage on the good side. The car was flat bedded home and just pushed into the garage. There is barely room to push it back or forward, so I was hoping to drive it out to the driveway, fix it, then drive it back in.
Thanks
Bill
Now that I think about it, if the half shaft is completely out, it shouldn't stress the car too much to gingerly move it, but I still don't like the idea on some visceral level. :(
I think this is one of those "you'll just have to try it" kind of things but I can predict two things are likely to occur. 1) Since the half-shaft is an integral part (one of the three links) of the suspension and alignment, there will be nothing to pull the wheel into the differential and I can see the wheel going into a severe positive camber...to the limit of control arm twist. Just be aware of this. I've never done it so I can't say how much it will camber out. 2) A limited slip relies on axle torque differential for torque biasing. This means that if the differential sees a significant difference in torque, it will slip with a preference to the side with the lowest resistance. This means that you would have to essentially and as softly as possible idle the car around. If you apply any throttle, like if you have to get the car over a hump or incline, you are likely to just sit there and burn your clutch pack on the side with the half-shaft. There is, in reality, very little pressure applied by the pre-load spring in the differential so you really have to be careful when trying to get the car to move.
wes, first off, there is NO camber holding on the rear wheel with the 1/2 shaft removed....second off the posi locking preloading does NOT have enough of a lock on the diff to allow the car to move...maybe on dead level ground, but typically a driveway is not...sorry, need fix it where it is....
you try to roll it on that tire with no 1/2 shaft, you take a large chance in bending the t-arm....
