Alright so I picked up a '75 last week and I'm trying to get it running a little better. I took a peek under the air filter and I see that our old friend Bubba has been around. It looks like I have a zip tie holding the choke open and am missing a plate or something that connects into the manifold. I'd like to get these issues fixed and tune it so the car will run a little better. Any suggestions or insights you guys can provide?
Does the thing sound like it has a massive exhaust leak when it's running? Because that open port leads to the exhaust crossover.
If nothing's coming out, the engine either has heads that do not have a crossover, or it's blocked (intentionally or otherwise). If this is the case, you'll need to fix it or switch to an electric choke. You are also missing the pipe on the rear of the carburetor that the rear choke tube would connect to.
At this point, I'd say it would probably be easier to purchase a blockoff plate for that port and switch to an electric choke. Cliff Ruggles sells a kit that includes the choke element and pigtail.
It's should be the stove pipe that supplies heat to pull the choke off that's missing. That's probably why the choke is ty-rapped open. Your pic doesn't show what the choke coil hose is attached to or maybe blocked off.
