alternator rattle
I've got a rattle coming from the front of my motor, sounds like bearing starting to go. Problem is I can't pinpoint where it's coming from. Can I remove the alternator or the air pump belt and still get the car to start?

you could try the old broom stick in the ear trick. Use a cut off broomstick or big long screwdriver and with engine running (use caution around moving parts) put end on alternator (etc) and lean down and put your ear on the other end, if bearings are bad you will hear a lot of noise. try different units to gage differences in sound.

You can remove both belts and start the car. No noise you know it is on or the other. If you still have a noise you know you have to look further. You can use a length of hose as a stethoscope.
