Drag racing, auto is the standard. It is more consistent. But, for more of a street car, most find a stick to be more "fun". Personal preference.
For the first gear ratio you take the first gear of the tranny, TH350 is 2.52, and multiply it by the rear end gear, assuming a 3.08..
2.52 x 3.08 = 7.76
or a 2004R...
2.74 x 3.08 = 8.43 (Which is still to high, or low depending on terminology, if you do have a 3.08 rear end)
