I just bought my first corvette. My husband has always been a Camaro and transam guy so he isn't that familiar with corvettes. We bought a 76 in Florida last week and overall it's in beautiful shape. But the rear end creaks and vibrates when I am turning especially at low speeds. It's worse when the car heats up. Also I notice when idling that there is a clunking noise that comes from the rear end. Anyone able to shed light on what this could be? I just put brand new tires on the vehicle. The guy I bought it from had said it had been sitting awhile. We are working out all the kinks like getting the wipers working and figuring out why the telescoping won't lock into place, but this creaking/clunking is concerning me a bit. The rear end seemed a bit unstable when we first got it but new wider tires fixed that issue.
It sounds like the diff needs additive. It has a posi with clutches that get grabby as they slip in a turn. You can either get new lube with the additive in it and change the oil or try adding just additive to the existing oil. Then take it to a parking lot and do slow figure eights to get the clutches coated.
Along with what '75 said......There are 5 u-joints in the rear end area, 6 including the one at the transmission. The creaking/groaning could be from them, look for telltale rusty dust around the ujoints to find a dry one, check it out. The clunking at idle is problably from the exhaust pipe coming into contact with something back there, you just have to get down and have a look at it while the car is running.
If your used to working on older Cameros/TransAms these cars are not greatly different, and there is loads of help on this forum with pretty much any problem.
