Welcome to the madness. First off, the 5 in your posted number should be a "S".
All 1968 Corvette small blocks were originally a 327 CID. Either a 300 or a 350 HP. Your Impala motor will do fine.
I have a 68 convertible that need restoration. The VIN is 1946785404301
wich I think is an early ´68.
The car needs a lot of work, and it does not have its original engine (has a 350 from a truck).
It´s a manual transmission car. I do not know what engine came from factory. Car has a 6.300 red line tachometer.
On the other side, I came with a freshly rebuilt 327 from a 1968 Impala.
Do this engine will work fine on the corvette?
Thank you from Spain!
If you engine was originally a 327 you will have a return line from your fuel pump to the gas tank. My 68 was originally a 427, 435 HP. It had a 327 engine in it when I bought it 25 years ago. The 427 does not have a return line to the gas tank. I had problems with vapor locking after the engine got hot, and I tried to restart it. This was always a problem, and I tried just about every method known to fix it. Since the extra gas would not return to the tank and just sit in the lines and Carb. and cook, thus turning to vapors and not letting me start the car until it cooled down.
I have gone to a 427 now, with elect. fans and everything is running great and also runs much cooler. Not the 220 degrees as before.
My RPM red lines at 6500. This will sometimes tell you if you had a 427 from factory, unless the gauge had been replaced. Also no return line will indicate that you had a 427.
Any 327 will work fine.
Enjoy your 68 it is in a class of its own.
