9 Inch Ford IRS for a VETTE !

bet the 1/2 shafts are not much if any stronger than stock, so untill the unit passes some good stiff tests in that area, well, I'd have to pass....
we all know the weakest link by FAR, in a stock setup, is the 1/2 shafts for a variety of reasons.....

1. It's still the same design as he Vette, no better. Doesn't have upper control arms and uses the half shafts as control arms, just as the C3.
2. How do you put a sway bar on it?
3. It mounts quite a bit differently on the top and front of the carrier -- some custom brackets needed, at the least. I wouldn't give up that monster aluminum mount in my 1980 for that mounting solution -- ever.
4. Rod ends suck for street use. They get ruined by water and small amounts of gravel and other junk. They just get torn up, hence why they are not used on street vehicles.
I think this would be good for custom cars, as it's intended purpose. And if I ever build that Cobra / custom autocross car that I want to build, I've now found my rear end housing !!
Pretty cool.

But the price  $3995 for the base kit? I'd rather spend the money on a big block :yesnod:

I like the inboard discs and all, but it raises some good questions.

Bryan the reason I posted this was not to say “This is what I want and it’s an engineering marvel.” I merely wanted to point out that it is a viable option to entertain putting a 9” Ford chunk in a C-3 Vette center. The only piece I see that appealed to me was the fact that there was a Heavy Duty 9” pumpkin in the middle of it and that it was possible to do an IRS with it.
I would still want to utilize the 6 Link we have all been working on and I would also want to retain my C-3 Offset T-Arms and Swaybar ect. The only thing I am wishing for is a Batwing mount similar to the one in my ’80 that I could screw in a 9” FORD Chunk !
If Aussie71BB finds a housing that mounts like the ’63 – ’79 I might revert to the old style crossmember to get one.
Think about it……………………..give me chills!!!!! JIM
PS go to this web-site http://www.progressiveautomotive.com/rearends.htm and look at the front mount and the Batwing on the Dana36 street rod. I think we could use this set up to put a Dana 36 in a C-3 and still use the C-3 T-Arms. But use the ‘90s Batwing and struts instead of our 6 link. JIM
