If the block is sound, the block alone is worth the 500.00, and a good crank 250-400.00
pistons are throw aways if you are going to bore it, so is the cam. Heads are worth another 250/pr
$500 is a good price for a BB rebuild as long as the block is in good shape. I paid $1000 for mine with crank, cam, lifters and merlin heads. I spent about $2,400 on the rebuild plus parts, and now I have a real fire breather!!! Good luck, Big Blocks kick but!

Re: What should a big block cost? (467-Ratman)
I paid $1,000 for my 454 delivered to my door. Looking back I guess I over paid but the owner wouldn't budge. It was a complete 1987 FI 454 complete with computer hook ups. I guess if I had more free time I coulda looked around and got just a basic block. I ended using only the block, crank & rods. Everything else will be aftermarket.
Every BB I saw in the papers around here were going for Primo $$. Never under $1,000, For me it was one of those "strike while the iron is hot" deals. I saw the ad in the paper, I was off that day, the engine was 18mi away and the guy offered to deliver. As it happened, it turned out to be a 4-bolt!
Around the same time, here on the forum there was a guy selling an original LS-6 in CA. He wanted $2,000 + shipping without the intake, carb & exhaust manifolds. It hadn't been run in a while and would need rebuilt anyway. I think I should be able to crank out a few more ponies than the LS-6. :D
