Need a bit of advice. The engine (396) in my 1969 is trash - long story. Short version is I bought it that way. Suspension and brakes are all upgraded to modern components. The cars purpose is to be a street beast that does duty at cruise nights, car shows, and light-to-light flights.
I am thinking about a GMPerformance 427. They are about $10k.
Keeping the cars purpose in mind, what would you do if your TOTAL BUDGET was $16k?

Another vote for Mark at vortecpro. With Mark you get a custom built engine to do exactly what you want it to do. There is no doubt you will end up with better parts and more HP for the $$$ than anything you'll buy as a typical "crate" engine...even from GM.
I've been to his shop a few times and can guarantee you he is very picky about his machine work and what goes out the door.
Plus he will spend the time to help you select exactly what you need and be there to help tune it later if needed. Probably won't need to...he'll have it dialed in before it goes on the truck to you. Or you can even go to his shop and watch the dyno test and pick it up and take it home as many others have done.
Search here and on the Chevelle Forum for lots of satisfied customers. One of them is in a thread right now about driving his 10 sec C-3 with a 650 HP Vortecpro 496 on a cross country roadtrip.
Yeah, I was considering an LS motor. The shop scared me with cost for conversion. They haven't done one before, so I wouldn't use them. I'll look more into it. Any idea on guesstimate for conversion?
