Default 71 Tachometer cable

I just installed a new tach cable in my 71...it broke within 30 miles. Any ideas? Am I missing a part? Cable was ran from the tachometer to the distributor. .I'm using an HEI unit with tach drive. The cable broke on the tach side.

If you lubed the cable before installing it the only cause has to be a damaged cable housing.

Install a new cable and connect just the tach end. At the distributor end, turn the "inside" cable by hand to see if there is free play. You can also connect a drill motor to this end and run the drill in reverse and see if your tach responds as it should. You may have a tach issue - binding, etc.
Good luck,

If the cable broke at the tach end (did the tip break off ?) it means that the cable was turning freely up to that point. It may have been a defect in the new cable. I'd send it back for a replacement.

The cable broke about 3 inches behind the tach.
