Default LS wiring on my 71

I'm finishing the wiring on the LS swap.

As I've done other LS swaps I ran a 4 gauge wire from the starter stud to the stud on the alternator. Original wiring on the 71 brought the power wire from the starter stud around and to the horn relay. I deleted this wire and ran a 8 gauge wire from the alternator stud to the horn relay. In the process I deleted the fusible link.

So without the fusible link thought I should add a Maxi fuse in-line on the wire from the alternator wire to the horn relay to protect the car. What size fuse? I bought a 40 amp. Too big? Too small? I don't have any large amp draws. No air or large stereo systems.

Thanks

Size the fuse to protect the 8 gauge wire. I'd say a 40amp fuse is too small. There are charts available to tell you what size fuse to use with the wire size.

You don't have any large amp draws but a dead short is a whole different story.
