I had a year old "performance" coil go bad all at once. Found a crack in it. No indication of a problem until it stopped working. Went home on a flat bed.
I have had several "coil n cap" coils go bad. Just cruising along at 3500 RPM or so, then backfire through carb and dead coil. I believe they overheat and open up dramatically. Very frustrating. I always carry a spare.
I intend to rectify my aftermarket MSD HEI distridutor situation as soon as I get back to the states.
i just went thru a frustrating experience with this. my vette would start sometimes and sometimes not. I have a rebuilt distributor from Accel, 2 yrs old, and i took the ignition module to Autozone to test it, they ran it for about 5 minutes, no problem. so i test the pickup coil, and the pink wire to the distributor and everything is fine. the ignition coil itself was giving various readings, so i took it to another parts place and they tested it several times and thought it was not good. so i bought a new one,$30, went home, put everything back together and NO GO !!. in frustration i dug the old distributor out of the attic and wiped off the GM ignition module, put some dielectric grease on the bottom of it, installed it and VROOM!! runs like a top, that was last Thursday evening, drove it all weekend, no problems. So I'm going to run the 24 yr old ignition module with the GM logo on it til it drops.
