any of you guys with a big block ever use a crower cam? the one i am thinking about is part number #1915
grind number 268h
intake duration 268 lift .478
exhaust duratin 274 lift .479
That's pretty mild- if you're looking for plenty of low end torque & not worried about power above 5000-5500 RPMs it may be what you want. I have a mild hydraulic flat tappet Crower in mine that has .517/.529 lift 280/286 duration(220/226 @ .050). With some basic head porting it gives me plenty of low end torque w/ fairly strong power past 6000 RPMs.
So, it really depends on what you're looking for. I'd suggest you call Crower w/ specifics on your engine/trans combo to see what they recommend. I've been very happy w/ my Crower.
I have to wonder if you mentioned concern for passing smog testing, although I don't think that's an issue where you are. I'm running slightly higher gears than you(3.55) and had a stock torque converter at the time- they recommended the cam I have. Trust me, my cam gives loads of low end(411 Lb/Ft of torque at approx. 3500 RPMs at the rear wheels). Unless you truly don't care about pulling hard much above 5000 RPMs I think you'd be disappointed in the cam you're talking about. Perhaps if you called Comp Cams for their recommendation & compared the 2 you'd have a better idea which way you want to go.
I don't think the new cam would be worth the effort to put in for what you will gain, if anything, in performance or any other benefits. Les' car really is a very good combination. More power to the wheels than my ZO6 at 6000 rpm plus lots of low end torque, 454 style!
That's really tame for a Big Block, heck most 350's nowdays have around .525-.560 lift. I wouldn't even bother taking the time to install that particular cam, give Crower or ISKY a call..
I would have to agree with the others here....A bit on the MILD side of things. One to consider and the type of application you are going to be in with your car, Street/Stip or normal driver? Is there lots of traffic (stop-n-go) or open roads to blast down?,,,,once you get above 240 degrees duration at .050" then things get a little lumpy and Vac HG drops at idle. Do you run a stick? Crower as well as Comp Cams, ISky and Crane make a good product you just have to apply to the right use.
