I drove my car for the first time in ~4 years yesterday...hooray. Woke up this morning to a significant smell of gas in the garage...went to work. Wife notifies me it's getting worse and says there is gas dripping on the floor. I'm looking at it and it looks like it's coming out the body of the fuel pump? Is that possible? I put in a new fuel filter and I assumed that connection was the issue and just needed to be tightened, but that connection is dry.
Can it really just leak out the body of the fuel pump? if so, can it be tightened/repaired, or is it time for a new pump?
If so - can someone point me in a direction of a good how-to thread or video?
I would check the fuel line hoses (input from the gas tank and output to the carb/filter). May have a crack in a hose that is syphoning/leaking gas from the tank and looking like the pump is leaking.
Good luck...
Most pumps have a bleed hole so if the rubber diaphragm goes out fuel will leak telling you to replace it. If it is the diaphragm, it could also be leaking into the engine and dilute your oil. But as said above, first check the lines and hoses.
It looks like the fuel pump...so I'm off to buy a new one. The pump looks like it only has two lines to it...but when I'm looking for replacement pumps, it looks like there are two options, one has 2 lines and another has 3 lines. It seems to suggest that the one with 2 lines is for Holley carbs (which I have now) and the one with 3 lines is for qjet carbs (which I hope to return to next year). Interestingly enough, there is a line that is right beside the fuel line coming from the rear of the car that is plugged. Is that another fuel line that was used with the qjet, and when the previous owner switched to Holley he plugged the line and put the "2-line" fuel pump in?
Short question - which pump should I use with a Holley carb? Will I have to change the fuel pump when I go back to the Qjet?
The system was designed with three lines.
Supply to pump
Line to carb
Return to tank
The return line helps keep the fuel cooler to minimize vapor lock and percolation. You may be fine without it, but it is usually better to have a return

Thanks - why are they clear to say the 2-line pump is for Holley carbs and the 3-line pump is for Qjet? Can I install the 3-line pump, connect the return line, and use it with the Holley?

The pump does not know what is connected. As long as the pump has ~5 to 7psi and enough flow for your engine the carb does not care. Use what you want.
Most of the factory GM cars with a Q-Jet from the factory had 3 lines. Not all, but most. Same with the Holley equipped cars- most had 2 lines- again, not all.
Like 74modified stated- the carb don't care as long as it gets the needed volume and not too much pressure.
